Required Ingredients

  • Yogurt: Homemade and store-bought are both fine. (I make my own yogurt, so I usually use homemade.) I recommend full-fat yogurt since it will be thinned out with milk, but nonfat and low-fat yogurt should work too. You can use regular or Greek yogurt, which has a high protein content, but if you use thicker yogurt, you may need to add a bit more milk to thin out the mixture and make it drinkable. I tested the recipe using plain yogurt, but vanilla is fine too.
  • Fruit: Both fresh and frozen fruit will work. I like to use (thawed) frozen fruit because it's cheaper and available year-round, but if you have a surplus of fresh fruit that you're not sure what to do with, this would be a great way to use it up. Because this recipe contains milk, I tend to shy away from citrus fruit to prevent curdling, but peach, mango, cherry, strawberry and other berries are all great options.
  • Milk: Skim milk, 2% and whole milk are all perfect for this recipe. I typically use 2% because it's what we usually have in the fridge.
  • Honey: I like to use honey as a sweetener because it's natural and pairs well with fruit, but any liquid sweetener will do. You could probably even use a powdered sweetener, though I haven't personally tested it.

Variations & Substitutions

  • Make it lactose-free: This recipe works perfectly with lactose-free ingredients. We always use lactose-free milk and lactose-free yogurt because several of our kids are lactose-intolerant.
  • Make it dairy-free and vegan: Replace the yogurt with plant-based yogurt (such as coconut milk yogurt), use a plant-based milk like oat milk or almond milk (but not canned coconut milk, which is too thick) and use agave or maple syrup for the sweetener.

How to Make Drinkable Yogurt (Step-by-Step)

Step 1: Combine fruit and yogurt. Pour the yogurt and fruit into the blender (making sure to let frozen fruit thaw first) and blend for 30 to 60 seconds, or until smooth.

Step 2: Add milk and honey. Add the milk and honey and blend until just combined. Taste and add more milk or honey if needed to thin out the yogurt or make it sweeter. Serve immediately or pour into individual bottles for later use.

And that's it—so easy! Our kids especially love the mango flavor, but they're all delicious. I like to make a batch or two on Sunday night and let them drink a bottle with breakfast or take it to school with them.

Helpful Tips

  • Let frozen fruit thaw before use: This is very important. If you are using frozen fruit and don't let it thaw before combining it with the yogurt, the mixture will end up more like frozen yogurt than drinkable. You can help this along by warming up the fruit in the microwave in 30-second increments, but make sure you use the "Defrost" setting (if your microwave has one) or stick to a very low temperature setting, like power 3 or 4, so the fruit doesn't get warm.
  • Experiment with different fruit: One of the fun things about this recipe is how many different fruit combinations you can try! There is no need to stick to only one type of fruit—try different blends to see what you like best.
  • Avoid or limit fruits with seeds: When using fruit that contains seeds (especially large seeds), try pairing it with a seedless fruit to improve the texture and reduce the amount of seeds in the yogurt. If you really want to stick with one type of fruit, you can always try blending it up and straining it before you add it to the yogurt, but you'll need to add extra fruit to compensate, which can be a little tricky to quantify since it's usually measured before blending.
  • Adjust the amount of milk and honey: Different types of fruit will require a different quantity of milk and honey due to differences in texture and taste. When trying a new type (or combination) of fruit, make sure you taste it and adjust the amount of ingredients until it's just right. Berries tend to require more honey, as their taste is typically more acidic.

Serving & Storage Instructions

If you wish to drink this immediately after making it, simply pour it into a glass and enjoy it right away.

If not, you can pour it into individual bottles (I bought 4 oz bottles specifically for that purpose, and this recipe fills precisely 6 of them) and store them in the fridge for up to 5 days. Make sure you give the bottle a good shake before serving, as the fat from the yogurt tends to rise to the top and form a "plug".
